General Archive of the Indies
General Archive of the Indies – Seville’s Treasure of Colonial History
The General Archive of the Indies (Archivo General de Indias) is one of the most important historical archives in the world. Located in Seville, Spain, this grand Renaissance-style building was originally constructed in the 16th century as a merchants’ exchange (Casa Lonja de Mercaderes).
In 1785, it was repurposed to house all the documents related to the Spanish Empire’s overseas territories, particularly in the Americas and the Philippines. Today, the archive contains more than 43,000 volumes and over 80 million pages of original documents, including royal decrees, maps, letters, and explorers’ reports — such as those of Christopher Columbus, Hernán Cortés, and Francisco Pizarro.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the archive is not only a key resource for historians but also a fascinating place for visitors. Its interior features majestic staircases, high ceilings, and peaceful reading rooms, making it a serene cultural stop in the heart of Seville.
