Torre del Oro
The Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) – Seville, Spain
The Torre del Oro, or Tower of Gold, is a striking 13th-century watchtower located on the banks of the Guadalquivir River in Seville, Spain. Built by the Almohad dynasty around 1220, the tower was originally part of the city's defensive walls and served as a military watchtower to control access to the river and protect the city from naval invasions.
Its name, “Tower of Gold,” is believed to refer either to the golden reflection it cast on the water or possibly to the golden tiles that once adorned its exterior. Standing 36 meters high, the tower is composed of three levels, each built in a different historical period, reflecting its evolving role through centuries.
Today, the Torre del Oro houses a naval museum that showcases Seville's maritime history, including models of historic ships, maps, and navigational instruments. It remains one of Seville’s most iconic landmarks, offering panoramic views of the river and city from its rooftop.
